The name 'Esan' was adopted from an old Oriental parable. The story, titled 'Ugong Esan (樽碗旃撸)' is found in the 'Tang Mun Section (鞣冽)' of the book 《Liezi (知憝)》. Ugong is the name of an old man who lived in ancient China. 'Esan' is a Chinese phrase that means 'moves a mountain.'

Ugong lived in an isolated place. There was only one road connecting his home to towns. The road was blocked by mountains on each side. The mountains were so big and high, Ugong and his family could not go around them, but had to climb over one of the mountains to get to the town. At a later stage of his life, Ugong thought he had had enough of the mountains and the inconvenience they were causing him and his family. He began shoveling the earth of the mountains and carrying it to a remote lake. People who saw this asked him what he was doing. Ugong answered that he was going to get those mountains out of his way to the towns. People laughed at his plan, saying 'the mountains are too big for you to dig away during the rest of your limited lifetime.' Ugong rebutted, 'no, you are wrong. I have children and they have their children too. I may not accomplish this project during my lifetime, but my children, their children, and their children will continue working on it. My family line is infinite but the mountain cannot grow bigger nor bear children. Eventually, there will come a time when my descendants see the mountain completely removed and the area becomes flat.' The people regarded his resolution as an old man's obstinacy and stopped arguing with him.

There were gods who lived in mountains, one god in each mountain. The mountains were their territories. They could live and exercise power as a god only in their respective mountains. If the mountains disappeared, the gods would have no place to live and exercise their power as a god. They might have to die. The gods were frightened to hear of Ugon's plan, as they saw logic there. The gods hurried to heaven and met the Almighty god. They asked the Almighty god to move their mountains to another place so as to avoid being dissembled by Ugong and his descendants. The Almighty god granted their wish and moved their mountains to another province overnight. The next morning, Ugong and the town folks saw that the mountains had disappeared.
This unusual story was recorded in the book in order to teach people that with strong resolve and persistency, you can achieve anything.
